Renovation

External Rendering
There are 4 main types of external rendering that can be applied to a building.
Traditionally Render was lime based mortar that was applied to the outside of a home to provide a better quality finish. This was then painted to add weather protection.
Cement based render is a mixture of sand and cement that is generally considered superior to lime based render in terms of weather proofing and lifespan, it is however prone to cracking. Lime and cement mixes are also possible to allow an amount of movement in the render that helps to prevent cracking.
More modern renders that are highly weatherproof and highly resistant to cracking are the tried and tested K-Rend and also the newer silicone hybrid based renders. These are generally considered superior to traditional renders as they offer surfaces that do not require painting or upkeep and will last for many years with no upkeep or maintenance.

Retaining Walls
Sometimes you inherit an issue with a property that needs to be addressed as a matter of safety and urgency.
Often after heavy rain an old retaining wall can crumble, shift or fail.
We are well able to repair, replace or remove retaining walls as required.

Open plan homes generally require timber or steel beams added to support the weight of the building. We are fully insured and have a structural engineer who can provide technical drawings and load calculations
Chimney Removal & Refurbishment
Chimneys that are no longer required can cause a house to have cold areas on the walls, damp patches, drafts or simply need to be repointed.
On some occasions it is desirable to remove a chimney entirely for safety or aesthetic reasons or if the chimney is causing water ingress into the property.
This is easily done in most cases and a roof is extended over the hole that is left when the chimney is removed.
Other reasons to remove a chimney are to reduce the weight on a load bearing wall prior to commencing internal structural work such as open plan living that requires internal walls or fireplaces to be removed to allow steel or timber beams to be inserted.
We also repair and repoint chimneys and fireplaces, install log burners and other related tasks.
